Amazon launches EU sovereign cloud to meet data rules
Amazon has launched its European Sovereign Cloud in Brandenburg, Germany, a cloud service designed to keep data fully within the European Union.
The platform is physically and logically separate from other AWS regions and is managed by a new EU-based parent company led by EU citizens.
Amazon said the service has no critical dependencies on non-EU infrastructure and can operate independently if global communications are disrupted.
Stéphane Israël will lead the new cloud unit, with Stefan Hoechbauer as managing director, supported by a five-member advisory board.
The launch comes as European regulators tighten data privacy rules and scrutinise major cloud providers under the Digital Markets Act.
