Amazon keeps 80% of USPS volume in new delivery deal
Amazon has reached a new delivery agreement with the US Postal Service that keeps about 80% of USPS’s existing delivery volume, easing pressure on the cash-strapped agency.
The new terms cut USPS’s Amazon package volume by about 20%, instead of the two-thirds or larger reduction Amazon had previously threatened.
Amazon generates about US$6 billion in annual revenue for USPS.
USPS said it could run out of cash as soon as October, and it has posted US$118 billion in net losses since 2007 as first-class mail volume fell.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Amazon’s rural expansion strengthened its negotiating position
- This agreement follows Amazon’s US$4 billion plan to triple its rural delivery network by the end of 2026 1.
- The expansion let Amazon handle more deliveries in-house, even in sparsely populated rural areas that the US Postal Service (USPS) and other carriers often cover 2.
- After completion, Amazon’s network can deliver over 1 billion additional packages a year across 1.2 million square miles 3.
- That extra capacity gave Amazon leverage to say it could cut USPS volumes by at least two-thirds, before settling on a new agreement that kept around 80% of its existing USPS deliveries 4.
The deal also supports Amazon’s fight with Walmart in rural retail
- Talks with USPS fit into Amazon’s wider competition with Walmart for the US$1 trillion rural retail market 5.
- Walmart has long led in rural shopping, with stores within 10 miles of nearly 90% of Americans 5.
- Amazon’s logistics spending helps it offer same-day or next-day delivery for household essentials in more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities 6.
- The agreement keeps USPS carrying a large share of Amazon packages, while Amazon grows its own delivery network as it competes with Walmart 4.
