Amazon invests $41m in India payments arm

Amazon has invested 350 crore rupees (US$41 million) in Amazon Pay India to expand its presence in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) market.

The funds were raised through the issuance of 350 million equity shares at 10 rupees (US$0.12) each to Amazon Corporate Holdings Private Limited and Amazon.com, as per regulatory filings.

In March 2025, Amazon Pay held a 0.6% market share with 111.06 million UPI transactions, far behind leaders PhonePe and Google Pay.

The funding comes as Amazon Pay India reported a decrease in financial losses.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Fierce competition in UPI demands strategic patience beyond capital injections

Amazon’s INR 350 Cr investment in Amazon Pay highlights the challenging path to gaining share in India’s UPI market dominated by established players.

Despite Amazon’s deep pockets, the company controls just 0.6% of UPI transactions compared to PhonePe’s 47.25% and Google Pay’s 36.04% combined dominance of over 83% of the market 1.

This competitive structure persists even though Amazon has invested billions in India over many years, demonstrating how difficult it is to displace established payment apps regardless of capital strength.

The rapid ascent of newer entrants like Super.Money, which surpassed Amazon Pay despite launching only five months earlier, indicates that market traction demands more than just financial backing.

Amazon’s challenge mirrors its broader India strategy, where the company has invested over $5 billion since 2015 2 but has needed to continually adapt its approach to local market conditions.

2️⃣ UPI’s exponential growth creates both opportunity and intensifying competition

The remarkable expansion of India’s UPI ecosystem—with transactions surging 46% year-on-year to 17,220 Cr in 2024—represents one of the world’s fastest-growing payment networks 3.

This payment revolution shows no signs of slowing, with transaction values jumping 35% to INR 246.82 Lakh Cr in 2024, explaining why Amazon and competitors are fighting so aggressively for market position.

The government’s decision to delay implementing market share caps until 2026 4 provides a regulatory tailwind for established players like PhonePe and Google Pay while creating a higher barrier for challengers like Amazon Pay.
