Amazon invests $4.4b in New Zealand AWS data centers

Amazon will invest over NZ$7.5 billion (US$4.4 billion) to build data centers in New Zealand.

The company said its Amazon Web Services unit will launch the AWS Asia Pacific region in the country.

Amazon said the investment is expected to support more than 1,000 full-time jobs annually and contribute about NZ$10.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP.

The company did not provide a timeline for the rollout.

Amazon first revealed plans for New Zealand data centers in late 2021.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Amazon’s synchronized global AI infrastructure expansion reaches record pace

The New Zealand investment represents part of a coordinated worldwide buildout happening simultaneously across multiple regions in 2025.

Amazon announced $30 billion for U.S. AI infrastructure expansion in June2, followed by AU$20 billion for Australia, described as “the largest technology investment in the country’s history”3, and $20 billion for Pennsylvania, marking “the largest private sector investment in the state’s history”4.

This timing suggests Amazon is racing to build AI-ready infrastructure globally rather than making isolated regional decisions, likely responding to exploding demand for AI workloads that require massive computing capacity.

Amazon appears to be positioning AWS infrastructure ahead of competitors by securing strategic locations worldwide before AI demand fully materializes, similar to how the company built fulfillment centers ahead of e-commerce growth curves.

2️⃣ Data center investments deliver outsized economic multiplier effects for governments

Amazon’s New Zealand investment demonstrates how data centers generate significant economic returns compared to their initial capital outlay.

The NZ$7.5 billion investment is projected to add NZ$10.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP1, creating a 1.4x economic multiplier effect that makes these projects attractive to governments seeking economic development.

This trend repeats across Amazon’s recent announcements, with Pennsylvania officials emphasizing job creation of “approximately 1,250 high-paying jobs” from their $20 billion investment4, while Australia’s deal focuses on supporting local AI startups through the “AI Spring” initiative3.
