Amazon to invest $4b to expand rural delivery network
Amazon announced plans on April 30, 2025 to invest about US$4 billion by the end of 2026 to enhance its delivery network in rural areas of the US.
This initiative aims to improve shipping times in less populated regions.
The company will build over 200 new delivery stations, cutting delivery times in half and creating around 170 jobs per site.
Udit Madan, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations, said the move supports rural customers as other logistics firms pull back due to cost.
This expansion builds on Amazon’s logistics push, which includes faster shipping goals and a large in-house delivery network.
Amazon still uses partners like USPS and gig workers, and has engaged local businesses in rural towns to help deliver packages.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Rural logistics: The high-cost frontier most carriers avoid
Amazon’s $4 billion rural expansion stands in stark contrast to industry trends, where competitors are actively retreating from less populated areas due to financial challenges.
Last mile delivery typically accounts for over 50% of total delivery costs, with this percentage climbing even higher in rural areas where distances are greater and stops are farther apart 1.
This explains UPS’s recent announcement of 20,000 job cuts and its decision to slash Amazon deliveries by more than half—rural routes simply aren’t profitable enough for many carriers under traditional models.
The USPS has historically shouldered much of this burden due to its universal service mandate, while companies like FedEx and UPS have limited their rural footprint where possible 1.
By creating 200+ rural delivery stations, Amazon is making a significant bet that it can solve the rural logistics equation that has challenged the industry for decades.
2️⃣ Creating a logistics moat through rural infrastructure
Amazon’s rural delivery expansion represents more than just improved service; it’s establishing infrastructure that competitors can’t easily replicate.
