Amazon to invest up to $25b more in Anthropic

Amazon will invest up to US$25 billion more in Anthropic after the AI startup said on April 20 it would spend over US$100 billion on Amazon Web Services over 10 years to expand capacity for its Claude models.

The new pledge adds to the US$8 billion Amazon has already invested and includes US$5 billion now plus up to US$20 billion later if commercial milestones are met.

Anthropic said it has secured up to 5 gigawatts of AWS capacity and expects nearly 1 gigawatt of Trainium2 and Trainium3 online by year-end.

The company said rising use had strained its infrastructure, as Amazon plans about US$200 billion in capital spending this year, mostly for AI.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Anthropic’s cloud bill rises with enterprise demand

  • Anthropic said annualized revenue reached US$14 billion, even as computing demand put pressure on its infrastructure 1.
  • About 80% of Anthropic’s business comes from enterprise customers, said Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic 1.
  • More than 500 corporate clients spend over US$1 million a year on Anthropic’s products 2.
  • Part of that demand comes from models like Claude Opus 4.6. Anthropic says it can handle up to 1 million tokens in one session, which lets companies work through large codebases or legal archives and fold the model into daily operations 2.

AI demand brings more money to cloud providers

  • Cloud companies can collect a large share of AI spending by supplying the computing power behind models, no matter which developer comes out ahead 3.
  • Anthropic’s spending still looks narrower than OpenAI’s. OpenAI has announced buildout agreements worth about US$1.4 trillion 4.
  • Amodei has warned that spending too far ahead of reliable revenue could be “ruinous” 3.
  • Amazon is building a US$11 billion data center campus in New Carlisle, Indiana, for Anthropic workloads. It also signed a separate US$38 billion cloud deal with OpenAI 4.
