Amazon to invest $12b in Louisiana data centers

Amazon plans to invest US$12 billion to build data centers in northwest Louisiana, according to a statement.

The company said the project will create 540 full-time jobs and support roles such as electricians and HVAC technicians.

Amazon’s fourth-quarter earnings report indicated a planned US$200 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, up from US$131 billion in 2025.

The company also announced a US$400 million fund to mitigate water infrastructure impacts and stated it will use water solely for cooling and operational needs.

Amazon will cover all costs associated with the Louisiana facilities and is collaborating with Southwestern Electric Power Company on electrical infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon’s $12 billion Louisiana plan is also a playbook for managing local pushback

  • The spending lands as more towns push back on data centers over pollution and public costs. Microsoft recently dropped a rural Wisconsin site after residents raised environmental and financial concerns 1.
  • Amazon says it will cover 100% of costs for the northwest Louisiana campus, plus new and upgraded electrical gear with Southwestern Electric Power Company. It also plans up to $400 million for public water infrastructure 2.
  • Amazon adds a $250,000 community fund for local STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and environmental projects. The move comes as lawmakers and activists press companies to share more details and take responsibility 3.

The data center boom is reshaping America’s energy grid and investor expectations

  • Wall Street still worries about the price tag for AI infrastructure. Amazon shares fell 14.3% over the past month as investors weighed aggressive AI capital expenditures 3.
  • The Louisiana plan follows Amazon’s disclosure of $200 billion in planned 2026 capital expenditures, up from $131 billion in 2025. Hyperscalers (the biggest cloud computing companies) together project nearly $700 billion in 2026 spending 1.
  • Data centers could account for about half of U.S. energy-demand growth by 2030, based on the International Energy Agency 4.
