Amazon introduces AI service for translating books
Amazon has introduced Kindle Translate in beta, an AI-based service for translating ebooks for select Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) authors.
The tool is currently in beta and available only to select KDP authors.
It supports translations between English and Spanish, and from German to English.
Authors can use the KDP portal to manage translations, set prices, and publish their books.
Translated titles will be labeled as such on the Amazon store and can be previewed by readers.
These books are also eligible for KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited.
Amazon said more languages will be added in the future.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Beta terms leave key questions unanswered for author adoption
- Amazon left out beta details that shape author uptake of Kindle Translate. Use is free during beta 1, but no post-beta pricing exists, so writers risk sunk time without cost clarity.
- Royalty policy is unclear. Translated editions may earn the same 35% or 70% rates 2 as originals, or Amazon could take a larger cut for AI translation. That changes the math versus hiring human translators at $0.10-0.25 per word 3.
- Ownership of AI-made translations is not addressed. Standard KDP terms grant Amazon a nonexclusive, irrevocable license to distribute Books worldwide 2. Authors can sell elsewhere unless they choose KDP Select, which imposes 90-day digital exclusivity 2.
Post-editing and localization services face immediate Spanish-language demand
- Publishers and localization shops can meet early English-to-Spanish demand with post-editing services. TechCrunch says AI makes mistakes, so writers who lack target-language fluency need a human to review outputs for accuracy 1. This opens a middle tier between full human work and raw machine text.
- Spanish-market marketers gain a lift as translated books qualify for Kindle Unlimited in supported regions 14. KU can aid discovery, which boosts reach. Authors new to Amazon Marketing Services ads will need localized copy and keywords to compete in a Spanish ebook segment tied to a $15.9 billion global ebook market by 2025 3.
