Amazon India shifts Fresh to scale quick commerce push

Amazon plans to wind down its 4- to 24-hour grocery delivery service Amazon Fresh in 10 to 15 major Indian cities as it shifts focus to rapid delivery offering AmazonNow.

The shift reflects rising demand for quick commerce in India, where nearly 40% of online grocery sales now come from quick commerce, and shoppers are placing smaller and more frequent orders.

UBS Global Research said Amazon, Flipkart, and Reliance Retail are scaling dark stores as rivals like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart intensify India’s quick commerce race.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon’s quick commerce pivot goes beyond speed

  • Amazon’s new service, Amazon Now, starts in three cities and aims to grow to more than 300 micro-fulfilment centers (small local warehouses designed to speed up delivery) 1.
  • Blinkit already runs a nationwide footprint of 1,816 stores 2.
  • While Blinkit leans on essentials, Amazon Now pulls from a wider catalog, with 40,000 items delivered within hours and more than 1 million available for same-day delivery 1.
  • The service targets repeat use among high-value shoppers, since Prime members who use it have reportedly tripled their shopping frequency 1.

Quick commerce profits face fresh strain as big tech joins in

  • Margins remain thin, with Blinkit only recently recording its first adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) profit of 40 million rupees (US$429,000), while Swiggy Instamart posted quarterly losses of 9.1 billion rupees (US$97.4 million) 3.
  • Deep-pocketed entrants such as Amazon and Flipkart are stoking a price fight, lifting sector-wide discounts to 55% in January 2026 3.
  • That jump in discounting could undo years of margin gains across quick commerce 3.
  • The contest may slide toward a war of attrition, where the winner lasts longest while absorbing losses 3.
