Amazon highlights India water steps under data center scrutiny
Amazon said on June 19 that its India operations had become water positive in 2026, a year ahead of plan.
The company said it reduced water use across its data centers, offices, and warehouses.
The company said it now returns more water to communities than it uses. Amazon does not use water to cool its Indian data centers.
Amazon also said its broader replenishment efforts are expected to return more than 22 billion liters of water each year . This water will go to local communities.
The update comes as India faces severe water stress. The World Bank said 600 million people in India face water stress. Amazon plans to invest more than US$35 billion in the country by 2030.
The announcement also comes as big tech companies face scrutiny over AI infrastructure. Google aims to replenish more freshwater than it consumes by 2030, while a study estimated 60% to 80% of India’s data centers could face high water stress this decade.
