Amazon files lawsuit to block enforcement of New York labor law

Amazon has filed a lawsuit against the New York State Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) to prevent enforcement of a new state law on private sector labor relations.

The company argues the law lets PERB claim authority over union organizing and workplace disputes, which Amazon says should be handled by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

The law, Senate Bill 8034A, was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul earlier this month.

Amazon said PERB used the law to file a charge over the firing of a Staten Island warehouse worker, even though the NLRB is already reviewing the case.

The NLRB has also sued New York in federal court to block the state’s law, citing concerns about conflicts between state and federal authority.
