Amazon faces Australia lawsuit over child safety labels
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), said on May 29 it had started legal action against Amazon’s local unit.
The regulator alleges breaches of product safety labeling laws over children’s backpacks sold in Australia without required button-battery warnings.
The regulator said the “Unicorn Toddler Backpacks” were sold on amazon.com.au between June 22 and November 1, 2022, and 267 more were being held in Amazon Commercial Services‘ fulfilment centers in Australia.
The ACCC said the backpacks and their outer packaging lacked required warning labels.
The products included a detachable, light-up unicorn plush toy containing button batteries.
Amazon said it is considering the case.
The ACCC said this was its first Federal Court case against an online marketplace alleging breaches of mandatory product safety laws.
