Amazon sued in UK for $5.4b by retailers, consumers

Amazon is facing two mass lawsuits in the United Kingdom, with claims totaling up to £4 billion (US$5.4 billion) related to allegations of abusing its market dominance.

A tribunal in London ruled on July 24, 2025, that both cases can proceed.

The first case is led by Andreas Stephan, a competition law academic, and represents over 200,000 third-party retailers.

This claim is valued at up to £2.7 billion (US$3.48 billion) and accuses Amazon of manipulating its “Buy Box” feature to favor products that use the company’s logistics and delivery services.

The second lawsuit, spearheaded by consumer advocate Robert Hammond, seeks £1.3 billion (US$1.75 billion) in damages on behalf of millions of customers.

This case also alleges unfair practices linked to Amazon’s dominant market position.

Amazon has opposed the certification of these cases, arguing that the economic methodology used to support the claims is flawed.

However, the Competition Appeal Tribunal has allowed both lawsuits to proceed on an opt-out basis. This means affected individuals and businesses will be included unless they choose to withdraw.

An Amazon spokesperson said that the claims lack merit and expressed confidence that this would be demonstrated during the legal process.
