Amazon eyes bigger stake in Anthropic with new AI funding

Amazon is reportedly contemplating a multibillion-dollar investment in AI firm Anthropic, following its US$8 billion commitment in November 2024.

If completed, the new investment would make Amazon Anthropic’s largest shareholder, overtaking Google’s US$3 billion stake.

Amazon initially invested US$4 billion in Anthropic and later doubled that amount.

Both Amazon and Anthropic have declined to comment.

The move aligns with Amazon’s efforts to strengthen its AI capabilities amid rising competition from OpenAI and Google.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Amazon’s evolving AI strategy reflects a broader transformation from retailer to tech powerhouse

Amazon’s potential additional investment in Anthropic follows a twenty-year journey of AI integration that traces back to its early recommendation systems and has now become central to its business strategy.

The company has been systematically reorganizing around AI and machine learning, adopting a “flywheel” approach where AI advancements in one area fuel improvements across the entire organization1.

This strategy has proven remarkably effective. Amazon’s recommendation engine alone generates approximately 35% of the company’s revenue through AI-powered personalization1.

Amazon’s current AI investments represent a significant evolution from its early approach of building capabilities in-house to now making multibillion-dollar strategic investments in specialized AI companies like Anthropic.

The shift mirrors AWS’s own transformation from an internal project to a business that has become four times larger than Amazon’s original e-commerce operation2.

2️⃣ Tech giants are racing to secure AI talent and technology through strategic investments

Amazon’s deepening relationship with Anthropic reflects an intensifying competition among tech giants to secure preferential access to cutting-edge AI models and the teams that build them.

Microsoft has invested heavily in OpenAI, Google has developed its own AI models while also investing over $3 billion in Anthropic, and now Amazon is potentially increasing its already substantial $8 billion investment3.
