Amazon extends Prime Day sale to 4 days, starting July 8

Amazon’s annual Prime Day event will last four days this year, from July 8 to July 11. This is the first time the sales event will run for 96 hours.

The sale will begin at 12:01 a.m. PT on July 8. It will feature themed daily “deal drops,” available while supplies last.

In previous years, Amazon has offered limited-time and invite-only deals during the event.

Prime Day was launched in 2015 to attract subscribers to Amazon’s US$139-a-year Prime membership and increase mid-year sales.

Initially a single-day event, it expanded to 48 hours in 2019. An additional fall sales event has been introduced in recent years.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Prime Day’s strategic evolution reflects Amazon’s mastery of retail seasonality

Amazon’s extension to a four-day event continues a deliberate pattern of gradual expansion that has defined Prime Day since its inception.

The event began in 2015 as a 24-hour celebration of Amazon’s 20th birthday across just 9 countries, but steadily grew to 30 hours in 2017, 36 hours in 2018, and 48 hours in 2019 1.

This methodical extension has yielded impressive results, with the 2024 Prime Day generating approximately $14.2 billion in sales, representing an 11.8% increase from the previous year 2.

The strategic timing in July creates a new retail “holiday” during what was traditionally a slower shopping period, effectively inventing a mid-year sales season that has become a significant milestone on the retail calendar.

By introducing daily themed “deal drops” this year, Amazon is applying scarcity marketing principles that encourage multiple visits throughout the extended event period, potentially increasing overall engagement.

2️⃣ Prime Day remains fundamentally a membership acquisition and ecosystem expansion tool

Despite its evolution into a major shopping event, Prime Day’s core purpose remains driving Prime membership growth, with historical data showing new subscriptions consistently peak during the event 3.

The $139 annual membership fee represents significant recurring revenue, with Amazon’s loyalty program serving as a cornerstone of its business model that generates predictable cash flow beyond the direct sales from the event itself.
