Amazon explores sales of Nvidia-rival AI chips

Amazon is in talks to sell its Trainium AI chips for use in other companies’ data centers,. The move would expand the business beyond Amazon Web Services (AWS) as it seeks a bigger role in AI hardware, Amazon AI chief Peter DeSantis said.

DeSantis said Amazon has started discussions with potential customers he did not name. OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, and Uber Technologies already use Trainium through AWS.

The latest chip, Trainium3, began shipping earlier this year, DeSantis said.

Amazon has also said a fourth version is expected next year.

Amazon is trying to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI accelerators. DeSantis said demand outside the US. Europe is key source of  interest in locally controlled computing infrastructure.
