Amazon expands AI-powered Alexa+ to all US users

Amazon has made its AI-enhanced Alexa+ assistant available to all users in the US, nearly a year after its initial launch.

The service was previously in an “early access” phase, requiring a waitlist or newer devices. Alexa+ now costs US$19.99 per month, but remains free for Prime members.

Users can also try it via the Alexa+ website and app.

Amazon said tens of millions of users have engaged with Alexa+, with higher interaction levels.

Some Prime members have been automatically upgraded, leading to complaints that can be resolved by a voice command to revert.

The upgrade improves Alexa’s ability to handle multiple queries and perform tasks, as Amazon faces growing competition from ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The real price of Alexa+ is deeper loyalty to Amazon Prime

  • The US$19.99 monthly price lines up with Google’s Gemini Advanced and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, yet Amazon bundles it with Prime for eligible members so many pay nothing extra 1.
  • Amazon uses the bundle as a hook, folding in a productivity tool for everyday work like drafting emails or handling several queries, which can help cut Prime cancellations 1.
  • Many also treat Alexa+ as cover for a rumored Prime increase from $139 to $159 a year, which would lift revenue while keeping subscribers on board 1.
  • Alexa+ sits at the center of a wider hardware and services network, linking new custom-chipped Echo devices to an upcoming Alexa+ Store that can book partners like TaskRabbit (a marketplace for hiring local help) or Uber (a ride-hailing platform) 2.

Alexa’s evolution from assistant to agent opens new doors for convenience and risk

  • A broader rollout of Alexa+ and Alexa.com marks a move from a basic voice assistant to an “agentic AI” that can run multi-step workflows like building a trip itinerary 3.
  • Rivals often stick to answers, while Amazon leans on actions through its smart home setup plus tools like to-do lists, calendars, or reservations, including ride and repair bookings 3.
  • Amazon is pushing this shift through its Alexa Fund, which now backs smart agents and embodied AI (AI systems designed to operate in the physical world, such as through robots or devices) 4.
  • More autonomy and trust also raise security stakes, including social engineering where a compromised AI uses personal data to craft convincing phishing scams 5.
