Amazon exercises option to acquire stake in fintech firm Valu

U Consumer Finance SAE, known under the trademark Valu, and its parent company EFG Holding, are pleased to confirm that Amazon has decided to exercise its option to acquire a direct equity stake in Valu.

This follows an agreement originally made in May 2022.

Under the deal, Amazon invested US$10 million in EFG Holding’s global depository receipts (GDRs).

The investment allows Amazon to convert the GDRs into shares in Valu during a qualified liquidity event.

As a result, Amazon will hold about 3.95% of Valu’s share capital.

The transaction will be completed during Valu’s first trading session on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX).

The fintech company was listed on May 21, 2025, with trading scheduled to start on June 23, 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Amazon’s strategic investment highlights big tech’s evolving fintech approach

Amazon’s investment in Valu exemplifies how tech giants approach financial services differently than traditional banks or pure fintech startups.

Rather than building a bank, Amazon is strategically investing in financial services that enhance its core e-commerce business, a pattern evident across its global operations.

Since 2018, Amazon has developed various financial products including Amazon Pay (digital wallet) and Amazon Cash (for underbanked populations), positioning itself as a financial services facilitator rather than a direct provider 1.

By 2018, Amazon had already provided $3 billion in loans to 20,000 small businesses through Amazon Lending, demonstrating its focus on services that directly support its seller ecosystem 1.

The investment in Valu follows Amazon’s strategy of entering financial services through partnerships and strategic investments rather than building services from scratch, reducing regulatory complexity while expanding its ecosystem.

This approach allows Amazon to enhance customer loyalty, gather valuable financial data, and increase purchasing power on its platform without the regulatory burden of becoming a traditional bank.
