Amazon cuts jobs in parts of AI division
Amazon confirmed on July 22 that it is cutting an undisclosed number of jobs in parts of its artificial general intelligence (AGI) organization, even as it continues to invest heavily in AI.
The company did not say which teams were affected within the AGI group, which works on AI models and also includes silicon development and quantum computing initiatives.
The layoffs are part of broader job cuts at Amazon after its pandemic-era hiring surge.
A 2025 report said Amazon planned to cut about 14,000 corporate roles, while Amazon has said it has eliminated more than 30,000 jobs since last October.
The AGI group has also undergone leadership changes.
Peter DeSantis replaced Rohit Prasad as head of the unit in December, and AGI lab head David Luan left in February.
Amazon has forecast US$200 billion in capital spending this year, up more than 50% from 2025, to support its AI efforts.
