Amazon cuts fewer than 1,000 jobs, mainly in its Stores unit

Amazon said on October 7 that it cut a small number of jobs, mainly in its Stores unit, as the company ran its Prime Big Deal Days sale.

A person familiar with the matter said fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers were affected. Internal Slack messages indicated that teams including customer service and selling partner services were involved.

Staff in the US, India, and the UK were among those affected.

The move follows a larger round of 30,000 job cuts that began last year and continued into January.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and executive chairman, said on October 7 that the cuts continued because the company overhired during the pandemic.

Amazon’s jobs site shows it is still hiring seasonal roles, though it does not say how many workers it plans to add.
