Amazon said on June 8 it signed a multibillion-dollar, multi-year deal with Corning, a US specialty glass and materials maker, to expand US production of optical fiber and connectivity products used in data centers.

The companies did not disclose financial terms.

Amazon said the partnership will create 1,000 jobs at Corning’s facilities in North Carolina and expand a fiber-optic technician training program with Catawba Valley Community College.

Corning has previously expanded optical communications manufacturing in Cabarrus and Catawba counties in North Carolina, including Catawba operations that make housing for fiber-optic cables.

Corning’s fiber, cable, and connector systems help move data within AI data centers, including between optical engines and switching hardware.

In May, Corning also signed a manufacturing partnership with Nvidia. Corning said that deal would help increase US optical connectivity manufacturing capacity 10x and domestic fiber production by more than 50%.

The agreement is part of Amazon Web Services’ AI infrastructure expansion. AWS said it is building data centers to support next-generation AI and high-density AI workloads.
