Amazon backs OpenAI alongside Anthropic, keeps both cloud ties
Amazon unveiled a strategic partnership with OpenAI that includes an investment of up to US$50 billion and a commitment to deploy 2 gigawatts of AWS Trainium chips for OpenAI’s enterprise platform Frontier.
OpenAI will expand its AWS spend to US$100 billion over eight years, up from a prior US$38 billion agreement signed last November. Initial US$15 billion investment followed by up to US$35 billion ‘in the coming months.’
The partnership ties OpenAI to a second major cloud provider and further diversifies its infrastructure and investor base.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Amazon’s deal is one piece of OpenAI’s massive infrastructure puzzle
- This section covers Amazon and Microsoft. OpenAI also has a roughly five-year, $300 billion cloud computing deal with Oracle (a cloud provider) 1.
- The Oracle agreement aims to add 4.5 gigawatts of data center compute capacity. That is more than double the 2 gigawatts of AWS Trainium chips OpenAI agreed to deploy for its enterprise platform, Frontier, through the new Amazon partnership 12.
- The bill adds financial risk. OpenAI reported about $10 billion in annual revenue in June, compared with roughly $60 billion in annual expenses for data centers and rented compute capacity 1.
- OpenAI’s multi-cloud strategy spreads infrastructure buying beyond its long-running Microsoft relationship. OpenAI and Microsoft called that partnership “strong and central,” while Microsoft keeps its exclusive license and access to intellectual property across OpenAI models and products 2.
Cloud providers are becoming the venture capitalists of the AI era
- These deals go beyond basic cloud contracts. They function as big bets meant to lock in fast-growing customers for the long haul.
- The structure resembles venture capital. Amazon’s added $35 billion depends on OpenAI meeting unspecified milestones, plus completing an IPO (initial public offering) or direct listing, per a regulatory filing 2.
- Amazon used a similar approach with Anthropic, an AI startup it has backed since 2023. It invested through convertible notes, and Amazon put the fair value of its stake at $14 billion at the end of December 3.
- The AI workload race creates a tight cycle. Amazon supplies funding plus custom Trainium chips, and OpenAI agrees to spend $100 billion on AWS over eight years, which supports Amazon’s AI-related capital spending 2.
