Amazon-backed More Retail eyes $300m IPO: sources

More Retail Pvt., a Mumbai-based supermarket and grocery chain jointly owned by Amazon.com Inc. and Samara Capital, is preparing for an IPO that could raise around US$300 million, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The company has hired Avendus Capital Pvt. and ICICI Securities Ltd. to advise on the listing, which could value More Retail at roughly US$2.5 billion.

The IPO may launch as early as next year and is expected to include both new shares and a secondary sale by current investors, the sources said.

Talks are still at an early stage, so key details such as size, timing, and structure may change, and More Retail may appoint additional advisers.

More Retail operates 767 stores in 350 Indian cities as of March, according to its website.

The company was acquired in 2019 from Aditya Birla Group by Witzig Advisory Services Pvt., a joint venture between Amazon and Samara Capital.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon’s stake may face regulatory scrutiny ahead of IPO

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) asked about the Samara-Amazon deal for More in 2019 after a foreign direct investment (FDI) policy change 1.
  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED), India’s financial crime agency, investigated Amazon under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) 2. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) alleged that Amazon runs multi-brand retail trading under a marketplace cover 3.
  • FDI rules bar e-commerce marketplaces from controlling inventory or running daily operations at inventory-based retailers 1. Firms partly owned by marketplaces also cannot sell on those platforms 1.
  • CAIT says Amazon’s influence over More Retail via shareholders’ agreements, which can grant veto or operational rights, violates FDI limits and should draw penalties before any IPO 3.

Tech vendors can target More’s omnichannel expansion (integrated online and in-store)

  • More Retail runs a grocery delivery app with a loyalty program (more+) and cashback 4. It also offers multiple payment options and better order tracking 4.
  • The company teamed with Times Prime, a bundled membership program from the Times Group, to extend its loyalty reach 5.
  • SaaS vendors in retail media (ad placements across a retailer’s sites or apps), last-mile logistics automation (software that optimizes delivery from local hubs to customers), or omnichannel payment solutions (unified checkout and reconciliation across online and store) can pitch during the pre-IPO push.
  • Prospects should map partners such as Times Prime to spot needs in predictive inventory management (demand forecasting to optimize stock) or personalized recommendation engines (algorithms that tailor product suggestions to each shopper) 5.
