Amazon is under legal scrutiny in India for alleged labor law violations at its warehouse near Delhi.

The Gurugram court in Haryana has summoned Amazon to address accusations stemming from a labor department investigation conducted earlier this year.

The investigation began after reports of unsafe work practices and unreasonable targets at the facility.

Accessed through the Right to Information Act, the inspection report indicated that workers lacked employment identity cards. Female workers also lacked safety-compliant clothing. Such lapses are hazardous, especially near moving machinery.

An incident in May highlighted conditions at the warehouse. A manager reportedly requested employees to verbally pledge against taking breaks, including water or restroom use, until daily targets were met.

Amazon termed the incident “isolated” and mentioned disciplinary action against the manager involved. The company also said it had not yet received the inspection report and declined to comment, citing the case’s sub-judice status.

The Manesar warehouse, with over 1,800 employees, is part of Amazon’s network of more than 60 fulfillment centers in India. Workers have independently reported high targets and limited rest, indicating a challenging work environment.
