OpenAI’s Altman eyes trillions in AI spending, hints at future IPO

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company could spend trillions of dollars in the future on infrastructure for AI, though details on funding are still in development.

Altman told reporters that OpenAI is working on new financial instruments to help raise the necessary capital.

He said these plans would go beyond the scope of the US$500 billion Stargate infrastructure venture, announced in January, which includes SoftBank and Oracle.

Altman also discussed ChatGPT’s rapid user growth, potential privacy features, and OpenAI’s interest in acquiring Google’s Chrome browser if a federal court orders Google to spin it out.

Altman hinted that OpenAI might eventually go public but did not provide a timeline.

He acknowledged user dissatisfaction with the recent rollout of GPT-5, and said the company is making improvements after receiving feedback.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Altman’s trillion-dollar vision dwarfs current AI market projections

Sam Altman’s plan to spend “trillions of dollars” on AI infrastructure significantly exceeds even the most optimistic current market forecasts.

The global AI market is projected to reach $826.7 billion by 2030, while the generative AI segment specifically is expected to hit $150 billion by 203212.

Even McKinsey’s estimate that AI could add $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030 represents total economic value creation, not infrastructure spending3.

This massive gap suggests Altman envisions a fundamentally different scale of AI development than what current market analysts anticipate.

2️⃣ Private AI investment patterns show concentration of capital in leading players

Altman’s funding challenges reflect broader patterns in AI investment, where massive capital requirements create winner-take-all dynamics.

U.S. private AI investment reached $109.1 billion in 2024, dramatically outpacing China’s $9.3 billion, but even this record level falls short of what frontier AI companies are seeking4.
