AlphaDrive fund targets Israeli AI, cyber startups

Yaron Elad and Elik Etzion, former executives at Israel’s Elron Ventures, have launched AlphaDrive, a US$100 million fund for cybersecurity and AI.

Leumi Partners is the anchor investor, and other backers include the Kahn family office plus investors from Israel, the US, and Europe.

The fund plans to invest from seed to later stages, mainly in startups founded by Israeli entrepreneurs, and it is joined by former UBS banker Gurinder Sidhu.

AlphaDrive said it has invested in five startups through direct deals and co-investments with Leumi Partners.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Leumi Partners could help AlphaDrive in ways that go beyond funding

  • Leumi Partners is an investment banking and research services firm, not a standard venture fund. That may give AlphaDrive support beyond money 1.
  • Its backing may open doors for AlphaDrive portfolio companies through Leumi Partners’ network of Israeli businesses, including customer marketing platform Optimove and insurance and banking analytics software provider Earnix 2.
  • The tie-up may also widen AlphaDrive’s pipeline of investment opportunities. Leumi Partners lists stakes in Israeli venture capital and private equity firms including Pitango and Viola Group 2.
  • Leumi Partners also lists capital markets work, including initial public offerings and debt offerings. That may give AlphaDrive’s top startups a route to public markets or later-stage funding 2.

Specialized spin-out funds are becoming more common

  • AlphaDrive’s launch fits a wider shift as experienced investors leave established firms to start smaller funds focused on fast-growing areas such as AI and software 3.
  • This setup gives large financial institutions a way to invest in early-stage startups with more speed than a traditional corporate venture arm, an in-house investment unit set up by a larger company.
  • With backing from an institution like Leumi Partners, spin-out funds can pair independence with deeper resources and a stronger source of opportunities 2.
  • This approach may shape venture capital by encouraging more specialized funds with institutional partners that can ease some early-stage risk.
