Alphabet’s SpaceX stake worth $94b at end of Q2

Alphabet said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that it held 551.2 million SpaceX shares worth about US$94.2 billion as of June 30, up from its US$900 million investment in 2015.

Quarterly filings showed Alphabet was the largest reported institutional holder of SpaceX, the US rocket company founded by Elon Musk.

Fidelity Investments was second with 302.6 million shares, followed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund with 154.1 million.

Based on about 13.1 billion SpaceX shares outstanding after the initial public offering, Alphabet’s holding represented about 4.2% of the company.

SpaceX went public on June 12 at US$135 a share and closed at US$141.29 on Thursday, valuing Alphabet’s stake at about US$77.9 billion.

However, the filings did not show trades after June 30 or whether pre-IPO investors were still subject to lockup restrictions.
