Alphabet’s investment arm leads $58m funding in AI chip startup
NEye Systems, a startup based in Emeryville, California, has raised US$58 million in a funding round led by CapitalG, the growth-stage fund of Alphabet.
The company is developing optical circuit switch chips aimed at improving the performance and energy efficiency of AI data centers.
The chips use optical technology to transmit data as light instead of electrical signals. This method is gaining popularity among chipmakers for its potential to lower energy consumption in data centers.
James Luo, a general partner at CapitalG, said that the chip’s advantages in energy efficiency and flexibility could benefit not only AI data centers but also traditional data centers.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI’s growing energy demands are driving an optical computing renaissance
NEye’s $58 million funding highlights how AI’s massive energy requirements are revitalizing optical computing approaches that have been developing for decades.
Current AI infrastructure could consume up to 500 terawatt-hours by 2027, double today’s usage, with data centers potentially consuming more electricity than entire nations 1.
This explains why optical technologies, which transmit data via light rather than electricity, are attracting significant investment, as they can deliver 100 to 1,000-fold reductions in energy consumption per task 1.
The timing is critical, as 73% of IT buyers report being unprepared for AI’s energy demands 2, while projections show data center energy consumption potentially increasing by 35-128% by 2026 3.
What makes nEye’s approach particularly significant is that it builds upon optical networking advancements that began in the 1960s when Charles Kao theorized about reducing glass impurities for communication, followed by Corning’s breakthrough single-mode fiber in 1970 4.
Technologies initially developed for long-distance communications are now being adapted for the microscale connections between AI chips, showing how historical innovations often find new applications during periods of technological transformation.
2️⃣ Hyperscaler innovations are creating new markets for specialized AI infrastructure
NEye’s strategy reveals how proprietary technologies developed by tech giants eventually create commercial opportunities for the broader market.
Google pioneered optical circuit switches for AI supercomputing but kept the technology proprietary [original article], creating a market gap that nEye is now targeting with its commercially available solution.
