Alphabet Q3 revenue tops $100b on AI boom

Alphabet reported its first-ever US$100 billion revenue quarter in Q3 2025, with growth across all major business segments.

The company said AI contributed to increased use of its products, including Google Cloud, YouTube, and subscriptions.

AI initiatives such as Gemini and new AI-powered features in Search and Chrome were highlighted as drivers of user engagement and query growth.

Google Cloud reported a rise in new customers and signed more large deals compared to previous years, with 13 product lines now each generating over US$1 billion in annual run rate.

The Gemini app surpassed 650 million monthly active users, and Google reported over 300 million paid subscriptions, led by Google One and YouTube Premium.

YouTube maintained its position as the top video-streaming platform in the US, and set a new record for concurrent viewers during a livestreamed NFL broadcast.

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, announced expansions to Dallas and San Jose airports, and is aiming to open service in London and working toward bringing service to Tokyo.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alphabet’s $100B quarter masks underlying AI infrastructure risks and profitability questions

  • It lifted 2025 capital spending to $91-93 billion for data centers plus specialized chips 1. Q3 2025 capex was about $24 billion, up 83% year over year, with a larger 2026 build planned 21.
  • Google Cloud posted a 23.7% operating margin, and public filings omit segment-level profitability for AI products such as Gemini, which has 650 million monthly active users 21. High inference costs for real-time answers (the compute expense to generate responses in real time) can squeeze margins if AI revenue trails infrastructure outlays 1. Google Cloud lists a $155 billion backlog, but profit depends on efficient monetization of training and inference jobs as Meta raises capex to $70-72 billion 31.

AI Overviews push publishers to rethink SEO for AI

  • Google’s AI Mode in Search reached 75 million daily US users, with query volume doubling in Q3 1. AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries at the top of some results that cite sources. Click rates fall to 8% when these summaries show up versus 15% without, and some publishers saw drops up to 89% with a median near 10% year over year 456.
  • AI Overviews cite multiple sources 88% of the time, yet 70% of cited pages change over 2 to 3 months regardless of rank 45. Longer, question-style queries trigger summaries 53% of the time, while short queries do so 8% of the time 4. Vendors can use analytics that track appearances and citation patterns, then focus on question-heavy verticals such as education platforms like Chegg, which saw a 49% traffic drop 5.
