Alphabet eyes India for Pixel phone production

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is reportedly in advanced discussions to relocate part of its Pixel smartphone production from Vietnam to India.

The company has engaged in initial talks with contract manufacturers Dixon Technologies and Foxconn in the past two weeks.

The report indicates that Alphabet plans to localize production of key components, including enclosures, chargers, fingerprint sensors, and batteries.

Currently, most of these components are imported from the United States.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India emerges as tech’s tariff shelter amid escalating trade tensions

The stark difference in U.S. tariff rates, 46% for Vietnam versus 26% for India, is driving companies to recalibrate their manufacturing strategies to maintain competitive pricing.

Apple has accelerated this shift, producing $22 billion worth of iPhones in India in the year ending March 2025, representing a 60% year-over-year increase and now accounting for 20% of global iPhone production1.

This transition isn’t limited to assembly operations. Google is planning to localize component production for enclosures, chargers, fingerprint sensors, and batteries, parts typically imported from the U.S.

The speed of these shifts is notable, with Apple even airlifting 600 tons of iPhones (approximately 1.5 million units) from India to the U.S. in April 2025 to take advantage of more favorable tariff rates2.

These rapid manufacturing relocations suggest companies are prioritizing agility in supply chain management to navigate unpredictable trade policies rather than maintaining legacy operations.

2️⃣ Electronics giants leverage India’s manufacturing incentives amid global uncertainty

India’s emergence as a tech manufacturing hub has been driven by government initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has successfully attracted investments from major electronics manufacturers1.

The country’s strategic importance is evident in production numbers: India now manufactures 99% of smartphones sold domestically, demonstrating a significant shift from import dependency to self-sufficiency.

Both Google and Apple are benefiting from India’s growing component ecosystem, with Google planning to localize parts like enclosures and batteries that were previously sourced from elsewhere.
