Alipay’s contactless payment Tap! hits 100m users in 11 months

Alipay has reported that its QR code-based contactless payment solution, Alipay Tap!, has surpassed 100 million users within 11 months of its launch in June 2024.

The platform enables users to make payments by tapping their unlocked phones against a merchant’s terminal or an Alipay Tap! Tag. This method eliminates the need for app navigation or QR code scanning, streamlining the payment process for both consumers and merchants.

The service now supports over 300 use cases, including food ordering, vending machines, and loyalty programs. It is accessible in more than 400 cities across China. Major brands such as Burger King and FamilyMart are utilizing the service.

International visitors to China can link their international cards to Alipay Tap!, allowing for seamless transactions throughout the country.

Ant Group, Alipay’s parent company, has committed 10 billion yuan (US$1.37 billion) to expand the Tap! ecosystem.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s payment evolution shows accelerating user adoption patterns

Alipay Tap!’s achievement of 100 million users in just 11 months follows a historical pattern of increasingly rapid user adoption in China’s payment ecosystem.

When Alipay first launched, it took five years to reach its initial 100 million users, but by 2009, it was adding 20 million users in just two months 1.

This acceleration reflects China’s dramatic digital transformation. By 2017, the country had approximately 890 million unique mobile payment users conducting transactions totaling around $17 trillion, more than double the previous year’s volume 1.

The latest iteration with Tap! demonstrates how payment platforms in China have mastered rapid scaling, building on an established digital payment culture where, by 2022, mobile payments were preferred by 85% of Chinese shoppers 2.

This growth trajectory has been enabled by China’s high bank account ownership (79%) and substantial smartphone penetration (71% as of 2016), creating favorable conditions for digital payment adoption 1.

2️⃣ Payment innovation success hinges on progressive simplification

Alipay Tap!’s focus on eliminating steps from the payment process continues a proven pattern of successful Chinese payment innovations that prioritize user convenience above all else.

The QR code revolution previously transformed China’s payment landscape, generating over $1.65 trillion in transactions by 2016 1, by simplifying the complex process of entering card details or bank information.
