Kakao Pay users can now make overseas NFC payments at Mastercard merchants through a new partnership with Alipay+ and Mastercard.

Kakao Pay is a mobile wallet based in South Korea, while Alipay+ is a global wallet gateway under Ant International.

The service lets Kakao Pay users tap their NFC-enabled Android phones at over 150 million Mastercard merchant locations worldwide, including in Japan, Southeast Asia, the US, and Europe.

This feature adds to Kakao Pay’s existing QR code and barcode payment options for cross-border transactions.

The NFC payment function is available on the latest Kakao Pay app versions, with plans to extend it to the KakaoTalk app for Android later in September, and iOS at a later date.
