Alipay launches AI commerce protocol with Qwen in-chat orders

Alipay has introduced the Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol, a framework designed to facilitate collaboration between AI and service platforms in China.

The protocol aims to create a standardized communication method.

On January 15, the Qwen App became the first platform to adopt the protocol, connecting with Taobao Instant Commerce and Alipay AI payment to allow users to order food and beverages via chat.

The protocol offers two payment options: instant payment for quick transactions, and delegated authorization for preset conditions.

Alipay plans to expand the protocol by collaborating with additional payment providers, merchants, AI developers, and device manufacturers to develop a broader ecosystem for AI-driven commerce.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Five checks to validate “open” and AI-initiated payments

  • Verify what “open” covers. Alipay calls this China’s first open framework for agentic commerce (AI agents acting for users to discover, decide, and pay) 1.
  • Ask how delegated authorization is secured and governed, since users can preset caps and the AI can complete travel and hotel buys automatically.
  • Test whether it works beyond Alibaba brands since the Protocol promises a “common language” across devices and platforms 1, and the first live path links Qwen App to Taobao Instant Commerce with Alipay payment.
  • Review payment risk for both modes, since instant payment uses AI picks with user confirmation. Delegated authorization skips step by step approval and shifts liability across users, merchants, and payment providers.
  • Inspect merchant terms and audits. Merchants can connect AI‑native apps to many AI agents through one build to cut integration costs 1. Certification and monitoring are not described.

Practical wedges for security and integration builders not named in the rollout

  • Fraud-prevention and compliance vendors should build delegated authorization monitors that enforce user-set spend caps plus time windows, since the AI can execute purchases under preset conditions for travel and hotels.
  • Tokenization and risk startups can offer per-merchant, per-intent tokens plus velocity checks for the Protocol’s two modes, one being delegated authorization. Payment tokenization replaces sensitive account details with limited-use tokens; velocity checks limit transaction frequency or amount 2.
  • Observability and incident-response providers can deliver conversation to transaction audit trails (observability means end to end monitoring plus logging). Users can compare prices, apply promotions, and pay in a Qwen App chat.
  • Systems integrators and API gateway firms can ship adapters that map the Protocol’s single integration aim to commerce stacks (systems integrators connect disparate software; API gateways route plus secure APIs). This uses its cross‑device reach 1.
  • Investors can fund conformance testing plus certification services to check the one integration claim and readiness to scale as Alipay seeks a wider partner set 1. Conformance testing verifies builds meet a spec, while certification offers independent attestation.
