Alipay, Banma roll out voice payments for cars
Alipay and China-based smart cockpit software company Banma Intelligence launched an in-car payment feature that lets drivers buy items by voice through Alipay AI Pay.
The companies said the system will first support movie tickets, hotel bookings, and food orders, with the car software handling selections before users confirm payment by voice.
They added that the feature planned for rollout in new vehicle models in the second half of 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The feature builds on platforms already in use
- The in-car payment service extends Alipay’s AI Pay rather than launching as a standalone trial.
- AI Pay already runs at scale. It passed 100 million users in February 2026 and handled more than 120 million transactions during Feb. 5 to 11, 2026 1.
- Banma Intelligence is a joint venture formed in 2015 by Alibaba and SAIC Motor, a large Chinese automaker, not a small startup 2.
- Banma software runs on Alibaba’s AliOS operating system and already appears in models from SAIC Motor, FAW Group, a large Chinese state-owned automaker, and Volkswagen. It reaches more than 3 million smart car users, which gives the partnership a direct route to market 3.
Agentic commerce could reshape marketing
- The tie-up offers a case of agentic commerce, where AI assistants complete purchases directly and skip parts of the usual buying process 4.
- If a driver says, “order bubble tea,” the system can skip search, browsing, and brand comparisons 5.
- That shift could push consumer brands and merchants to design for algorithms as well as people 5.
- In that setup, machine-readable product data and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which let software systems exchange information, may matter more than landing pages or ads because the AI may pick the option that software can parse most easily for the user 5.
