Alibaba’s wholesale platform unveils AI search tool for suppliers
Alibaba.com will roll out a new AI-powered search tool, “AI Mode,” for its wholesale marketplace next month.
The platform, which connects over 200,000 merchants globally, says the feature generates product recommendations and supplier comparisons based on natural language queries.
AI Mode is designed to automate the process of finding and evaluating suppliers, a task that previously took days or weeks.
The tool was launched to coincide with Alibaba.com’s CoCreate Europe trade fair in London.
Alibaba.com plans to charge for the use of AI Mode and its supporting engine, Accio, with a limited free trial available, and a target of 1 million subscribers by the end of March 2027.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Who pays for AI Mode will decide if it changes B2B sourcing or just adds fees
- Who pays for AI Mode is not stated, which changes its uptake. If buyers pay, they will want proof that faster sourcing shortens a process that took days or weeks 1 enough to beat free tools. If sellers pay, it becomes one more fee on top of platform costs and could push some merchants toward lower-fee channels.
- The 1 million subscriber goal by March 2027 looks high, while Alibaba.com serves more than 200,000 merchants 1. There are no early conversion data or pricing tiers, so the subscription case stays unproven.
Rival B2B marketplaces need AI sourcing to keep merchants as these tools become standard
- Operators like Global Sources (a Hong Kong-based wholesale sourcing platform), Made-in-China (a China-based B2B marketplace), and Europe-focused sites given the London launch timing 1 face pressure to match AI sourcing. Many B2B buyers already use AI at work, so services without natural language search and automated supplier comparison risk merchants moving to Alibaba.com.
- White-label AI sourcing modules can bring revenue for AI vendors, because many mid-tier B2B marketplaces lack the staff to build in-house large language model (LLM)-powered search. Focus on apparel, industrial equipment, and electronics where specs are complex and supplier review takes time, which makes AI matching more useful.
