Alibaba’s research arm gets US regulator nod for AI cancer tool

Alibaba Group’s research arm, Damo Academy, has received “breakthrough device” designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its AI-powered pancreatic cancer detection tool, Damo Panda.

This status allows for an expedited review and approval process.

Damo Panda, launched in November 2023, is a deep learning model trained to detect early-stage pancreatic cancer.

It showed 34.1% higher sensitivity than radiologists in a study using CT scans from 3,208 patients.

The tool has been tested in trials in China.

Damo Academy, founded in 2017, focuses on AI research and open-source chip architecture, including RISC-V-based processors.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Early detection dramatically improves pancreatic cancer survival rates

Alibaba’s AI breakthrough addresses one of medicine’s most difficult challenges, as pancreatic cancer has a mere 9% five-year survival rate largely due to late diagnosis 1.

When caught early, this survival rate jumps dramatically to 44%, highlighting why AI detection tools like Damo Panda could transform patient outcomes 2.

The Mayo Clinic has similarly been developing AI that can detect pancreatic tumors with 87% accuracy up to three years before conventional methods, showing this is a critical frontier in medical AI 1.

Alibaba’s claim of identifying six early-stage cases (including two missed by routine exams) in a 40,000-person trial illustrates the real-world impact of improved detection sensitivity.

This technology addresses the fundamental challenge that pancreatic cancer symptoms typically appear only in advanced stages, when treatment options become severely limited 2.

2️⃣ AI consistently outperforms human clinicians in cancer detection sensitivity

Damo Panda’s 34.1% higher sensitivity compared to radiologists follows a pattern seen across various AI cancer detection tools.
