Alibaba’s Qwen nears 1 billion downloads after new model launch

Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen model family reached nearly 1 billion cumulative downloads by March, and captured more than 50% of global open-source AI model downloads after the release of Qwen 3.5 model series.

Qwen logged 153.6 million downloads in February, more than double the combined total of the next eight major players, including Meta, DeepSeek, and OpenAI.

The report said Chinese open-source models overtook the US rivals in downloads, with the shift away from popular US models beginning after Qwen 2.5 launched in September 2024.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Qwen’s dominance is driven by an aggressive price and performance strategy

  • Qwen’s download spike follows a deliberate push for what one executive calls “diffusion” over “perfection” 1.
  • Alibaba Cloud slashed AI model pricing, with cuts reaching 97% on some services, aiming to win share by pricing below competitors 2.
  • Low pricing comes with speed claims, since Qwen3.5 is said to run 8x faster and cost 60% less than its predecessor, while reportedly beating models such as GPT-5.2 on some benchmarks 3.
  • The cost to performance mix resonates in Southeast Asia, where companies often favor budget and data control over small quality gains 1.

Open-source leadership can support cloud monetization and is a new geopolitical challenge

  • Alibaba frames open-source releases as a way to pull developers and businesses toward paid cloud services, turning popular models and related platforms into recurring revenue 4.
  • Momentum also appears in cloud results, since CEO Eddie Wu called the Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform, a service that lets customers access AI models through the cloud, “showing strong growth” and a new driver for cloud growth; Alibaba also reported Cloud Intelligence Group revenue up 36% year-over-year in the December quarter to RMB43,284 million (US$6,190 million), while AI-related product revenue posted triple-digit growth for the tenth straight quarter 5.
  • US policy faces pressure, since a US government commission warns China’s open-source approach creates a “self-reinforcing competitive advantage” 6.
  • US export controls focus on training hardware, yet they do less to slow broad use of efficient open-source models, which can generate proprietary real-world data and deepen China’s AI ecosystem 6.
