Alibaba’s Qwen integrates Amap for smarter travel, dining services
Alibaba has integrated its mapping and navigation platform Amap with its Qwen AI app, giving users access to route planning, navigation, and recommendations for restaurants and hotels in one interface.
Amap, acquired by Alibaba in 2014, is one of China’s largest mobile apps by monthly active users.
The integration allows Qwen to use Amap’s real-time traffic data and points of interest to build itineraries for users.
Qwen, launched in November, reached 18.3 million monthly active users within two weeks of its public beta, according to Aicpb.com.
Amap’s “Street Stars” ranking feature, which highlights offline destinations, will now be included in Qwen’s recommendations.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Amap’s scale and data give Qwen an edge in local search
- As of May 2025, Gaode (Amap) led China in monthly active map users, ahead of Baidu Map 1. Qwen hooks into the app so people can plan routes, get turn-by-turn help, plus find places to eat or stay in one screen.
- Years ago, Alibaba put Yu Yongfu in charge of a push to serve pro drivers, which sparked a feedback loop 2. More drivers raised traffic accuracy, which pulled in more users and kept improving the data. Qwen can use that edge for trip planning where real-time precision matters most.
- The company once held off on ads at Amap to perfect core navigation 2. Building AI into the map itself makes it harder for people planning nearby trips to switch to chatbots.
Startups can build travel agents on Qwen tools
- Qwen-Agent supports function calling, tool integration, plus retrieval-augmented generation, while cutting coding work 3. Builders can ship agents for tasks like business trip plans or local food finds.
- Qwen Code gives 2000 free daily requests through QwenChat OAuth and works with the OpenAI protocol, with support for several model providers 4. That lowers the bar for bootstrapped teams to prototype agent-led travel apps.
- As Alibaba uses Amap to take on Meituan in local discovery, outside developers can sell the ‘picks and shovels’ layer 2. Think vertical agents for accessible tourism or group trip coordination that big platforms may skip.
