Alibaba’s Qwen AI chief steps down
Lin Junyang said on March 4 that he would be stepping down as head of Alibaba’s Qwen AI model division, two days after the company released updated products.
In a post on X, he wrote, “Bye my beloved Qwen,” but gave no explanation for his departure.
Qwen’s mobile app had 203 million monthly active users in February, up from 31.05 million in January, and now ranks third globally behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT and ByteDance’s Doubao app, according to AICPB.com, which tracks AI products.
The jump followed user acquisition campaigns by Chinese tech giants during the Lunar New Year holidays.
