Alibaba’s Qwen-3 becomes first AI model to operate in orbit
Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-3 became the world’s first general-purpose AI model to be uploaded and operated in orbit, according to Adaspace Technology, a Chinese aerospace startup.
The deployment took place in November 2025 on a satellite constellation launched in May 2025, part of the “Star-Compute Project,” which aims to support AI training and inference in space.
The entire process, from uploading queries to receiving results, was completed in under two minutes.
Adaspace’s initial space computing centre included 12 satellites and marked the world’s first AI computing satellite constellation, with plans for additional centres in 2026.
The full Star-Compute Project intends to deploy 2,400 inference satellites and 400 training units by 2035.
Founded in 2018 and based in Chengdu, Adaspace has completed 14 space missions and was valued at over 6.8 billion yuan (US$970 million) after its latest funding round in July 2025.
