Alibaba’s Amap draws 40 million users to new AI ranking service

Over 40 million users tried Amap’s new AI-powered ranking service on its launch day, according to data from Alibaba, which owns the mapping app.

Amap, a China-based navigation app under Alibaba Group, introduced “Amap Street Stars” to rank and recommend 1.6 million restaurants, hotels, and tourist sites using AI algorithms.

The new feature directly challenges Meituan’s Dianping, a major user review platform in China.

As of August, Amap reported about 170 million daily active users, compared to over 30 million for Dianping, based on figures from Amap and QuestMobile.

Analysts from JP Morgan said Amap is becoming Alibaba’s main offline local services channel, complementing its ecommerce platform Taobao.

Industry experts noted that Amap’s large user base could strengthen Alibaba’s position in the ongoing competition with Meituan in China’s instant commerce sector.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba leverages substantial subsidies to jumpstart user adoption in competitive markets

  • The 40 million users who tested Amap Street Stars on launch day were likely driven by Alibaba’s aggressive financial backing of the initiative.
  • Alibaba allocated over $140 million in subsidies to encourage user engagement and spending at participating businesses through the platform 1.
  • This substantial investment demonstrates Alibaba’s willingness to use its financial resources to rapidly scale new services, similar to how the company historically offered free membership and tools like Alisoft to initially attract users before introducing monetization 2.

The launch reflects Alibaba’s pattern of challenging specialized market leaders through platform integration

  • Amap’s move against Meituan’s Dianping service mirrors Alibaba’s historical strategy of targeting market segments often overlooked or dominated by competitors 2.
  • The integration of ranking and navigation features addresses a clear user pain point, with Shanghai resident Shi Pei noting it was previously “inconvenient for a person to switch between different apps.”
  • Amap’s significantly larger user base of 170 million daily active users compared to Dianping’s 30+ million provides a substantial advantage in cross-selling lifestyle services to existing navigation users.
