Alibaba’s AI coding model Qwen 3 Coder rises in popularity

Alibaba’s Qwen 3 Coder model has captured over 20% usage share on OpenRouter by mid-August 2025.

The model now ranks second in usage on the platform, behind Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4, which holds a 31% share.

Alibaba launched Qwen 3 Coder on July 23, 2025.

The company said the model’s strength comes from better coding data and reinforcement learning.

The rise of Qwen 3 Coder comes as more Chinese tech firms, including ByteDance, Tencent, and Baidu, introduce AI coding tools amid growing competition in the sector.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Performance benchmarks reveal mixed results despite marketing claims

While Alibaba claims Qwen 3 Coder delivers performance “on par with Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4,” independent evaluations show a more nuanced picture.

In head-to-head coding comparisons, Claude Sonnet 4 “consistently outperformed” both Qwen 3 Coder and other competitors, providing “complete and reliable implementations” while being “the fastest and most accurate across all tests” 1.

However, Qwen 3 Coder demonstrated strong performance in specific areas, with one evaluation noting it “often surpassing Sonnet 4 in correctness and readability” for certain coding tasks 2.

The model’s 480 billion parameters with 35 billion activated for efficiency, plus support for up to 1 million token context length, represents significant technical capabilities 3.

Yet comprehensive evaluations found that while Qwen 3 Coder “performed well in clean markdown tasks,” it “struggled with visualization and TypeScript challenges” and remains “still behind proprietary models like Claude Sonnet 4 in overall performance” 3.

2️⃣ Open-source strategy emerges as competitive response to market constraints

Qwen 3 Coder’s open-source release reflects a strategic shift among Chinese tech companies facing competitive pressures from U.S. firms.

The model’s launch came “amid competitive pressures from U.S. tech firms,” with the open-source approach representing “a strategic shift among Chinese tech companies to build developer communities” 4.
