Alibaba says XuanTie chip shipments top 6 billion
Alibaba’s Damo Academy said more than 6 billion chips based on its XuanTie RISC-V processor designs have shipped, as the company expands into AI and automotive systems amid the US-led export restrictions.
Chief scientist Meng Jianyi announced the figure at the RISC-V Summit China in Shenzhen.
The figure appeared to cover cumulative shipments, though it was unclear whether it included chips made by Alibaba’s partners.
RISC-V is an open instruction-set architecture, an alternative to proprietary chip architectures such as those from Intel and Arm.
XuanTie includes the open-source Xuantie C910 core from Alibaba’s T-Head chip unit.
Meng cited Omdia forecasts that global RISC-V processor shipments would grow by nearly 30% a year and reach about 25% of the worldwide processor market by 2030.
Omdia separately said AI would accelerate adoption.
Officials and lawmakers in the US have raised concerns that China could use RISC-V to circumvent chip export controls.
