Alibaba upgrades Qwen AI with payments, in-chat services

Alibaba has upgraded its Qwen AI app to let users in China order food, book travel, and make payments directly within the chat interface.

The new features, now in public testing, integrate Alibaba services such as Taobao, Alipay, Fliggy, and Amap, allowing users to complete tasks without switching apps.

Users can authorize and complete transactions through Alipay, with payments set to expand to more services.

Alibaba said Qwen has reached over 100 million monthly active users since its beta launch in November 2025.

A new “Task Assistant” feature, currently invite-only, can make phone calls to restaurants, process up to 100 documents at once, and plan multi-stop trips.

The upgrades come as Chinese tech firms race to offer practical AI tools, following similar moves by ByteDance, Tencent, Meta, and OpenAI.
