Ant Group to sell 4% stake in Paytm

Ant Group is planning to sell up to a 4% stake in Indian fintech company Paytm through block deals.

According to Moneycontrol, the stake is valued at about 2,200 crore rupee (US$265 million) and is expected to be sold at a floor price of 809.75 rupee (US$9.75) per share.

This represents a 6% discount to Paytm’s closing price on May 12.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Ant Group’s systematic stake reduction signals changing Chinese investment patterns in India

The reported 4% stake sale continues a clear pattern of Ant Group gradually reducing its position in Paytm over several years.

In 2015, Alibaba Group and Ant Group invested $680 million to reach a combined 40% stake in Paytm, making them the largest shareholders in the company 1.

By 2021, before Paytm’s IPO, Ant Group had reduced its holding to 29.6% while Alibaba held 7.2% 2, and in August 2023, Ant Group sold an additional 3.6% stake for INR 2,037 Cr [original article].

This gradual withdrawal reflects a broader trend of Chinese investors rebalancing their Indian tech portfolios amid heightened regulatory scrutiny and changing geopolitical dynamics.

The careful, measured approach to stake reduction, maintaining significant ownership while gradually decreasing exposure, demonstrates how Chinese investors are adapting their strategies while protecting the value of their early investments in India’s digital economy.

2️⃣ Persistent profitability challenges despite market leadership position

Paytm’s continued struggle to achieve profitability highlights a common challenge faced by fintech companies that prioritize growth and market share over immediate financial returns.

Despite being a pioneer that helped digitize payments for over 333 million users in India 3 and successfully navigating multiple business pivots over two decades 4, Paytm reported a consolidated net loss of INR 544.6 Cr in Q4 FY2025 [original article].

While the company has managed to narrow its annual losses to ₹14,224 million in FY23-24 from ₹17,765 million in the previous year 5, achieving consistent profitability remains elusive despite its massive scale.

This pattern of “scale now, profit later” reflects broader fintech industry challenges where customer acquisition costs and competitive pressures often outpace revenue growth, even as India’s fintech market is projected to reach $990 billion by 2032 at a 30.2% CAGR 6.
