Alibaba unifies large model brand under Qwen
Alibaba said it has unified its large model lineup under the Qwen brand, and Tongyi Lab will remain the organizational name of its AI research unit.
The brand will use Qwen in English and Tongyi Qianwen in Chinese, including foundation models, domain-specific models, and a flagship consumer-facing Qwen app, Alibaba said.
Alibaba said it open-sourced Qwen 3.5 earlier this year and later released smaller Qwen 3.5 models.
The company said Qwen 3.5 ranked in the top four on Hugging Face’s global open-source large model leaderboard.
According to Alibaba, users placed nearly 200 million “one-sentence” orders through the Qwen app over Lunar New Year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Alibaba is turning its AI into a personal helper across its ecosystem
- The Qwen app goes beyond chat, since it can carry out tasks through tight links with Alibaba services, moving from an AI that answers to one that completes actions 1.
- Alibaba said users made nearly 200 million one-sentence orders through Qwen during Lunar New Year, including food delivery that the app can place through Taobao Instant Commerce, add discounts, then take payment through Alipay inside the chat 1.
- Alibaba plans to spend at least 380 billion yuan ($53.2 billion) over three years on AI plus cloud infrastructure 2.
The AI agent push could shrink Alibaba’s ad-driven profits
- An agent that follows commands end to end may pull users away from the usual e-commerce flow, where revenue comes from browsing pages then clicking ads 3.
- If Qwen cuts the need to scroll through Taobao, the number of ad slots could drop, which has long supported profits 3.
- Alibaba also gains leverage over many Western rivals, since it controls a closed loop from an AI request through payment and delivery instead of leaning on outside partners 3.
