🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Middle East streaming market surges amidst intense competition
The Hibrid-Alibaba partnership enters a rapidly growing MENA streaming market projected to exceed $1.5 billion by the end of 2025, with subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) services driving this expansion1.
This growth occurs in a competitive landscape where local players maintain strong positions. Shahid leads with 4.4 million subscribers, followed by YouTube Premium (3.7 million), Netflix (3 million), and StarzPlay (2.3 million)1.
The success of regional platforms like Shahid and StarzPlay highlights the importance of localized content strategies, which will be crucial for Hibrid and Alibaba’s streaming solutions to gain traction.
The region’s high-speed internet penetration and proliferation of smart devices are creating fertile ground for streaming services, with the overall online video market expected to grow fivefold to $8.4 billion by 20291.
This partnership comes as MENA consumers increasingly embrace digital content consumption, driven by a young, digitally-engaged population that demands seamless streaming experiences, which the Hibrid-Alibaba collaboration aims to deliver.
2️⃣ Cloud infrastructure becoming critical for GCC digital transformation
The Hibrid-Alibaba alliance represents part of a broader cloud adoption trend in the GCC, following pioneering moves like Jaleel Holdings’ transition to cloud infrastructure as the first UAE wholesale business to make this shift2.
This cloud migration trend aligns with projected GCC economic growth of 3.2% in 2025 and 4.5% in 2026, driven partly by expansion in non-oil sectors including technology and digital services3.
