Alibaba to invest $281m to expand Taobao partner stores in China

Alibaba will invest 2 billion yuan (US$281 million) to expand a network of Taobao-branded partner convenience stores across China.

The initiative aims to support its instant commerce and on-demand delivery business by upgrading existing stores with digital systems and supply chain support.

The company plans to roll out these partner stores in over 200 cities, with the first locations opened in Hangzhou and Nanjing.

Joining stores will receive inventory support from Alibaba’s platforms and Taobao branding.

Alibaba said Taobao Shangou, its instant commerce unit, had 300 million monthly active users in August and reached a peak of 120 million daily orders.

Rival Meituan is also expanding in this space, partnering with over 10,000 brands and claiming more than 500 million users.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba’s 2 billion yuan store push meets Meituan’s 65% delivery lead

  • Alibaba will put 2 billion yuan into partner stores to close the gap. Before instant commerce grew, Meituan held 65% of food delivery while Ele.me had 33% 1.
  • Peak daily orders hit 120 million for Alibaba versus 150 million for Meituan 1. Morgan Stanley sees Meituan near 75% of food delivery by 2030, with instant commerce at 48% for Meituan and 47% for Alibaba 1.
  • Each 1 billion yuan on costs and marketing added 150 million yuan in Alibaba sales versus 240 million at Meituan 2.
  • Alibaba holds 585.7 billion yuan in cash and investments versus 171.1 billion at Meituan 1. Analysts expect at least 160 billion yuan burned over 12 to 18 months 1.

Brands should localize Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) mixes for 3-5 km front-end warehouses

  • Target 50,000 front-end warehouses (small fulfillment centers) run by Meituan and partners by Q2 2025, with a goal of 100,000 by 2027, many stocking up to 15,000 SKUs for 3-5 km demand 3.
  • Non-food lines are growing across electronics, beauty, baby goods, and pet supplies 3. Miniso (a low-cost lifestyle retailer) logged over 20,000 daily orders after linking 4,500 stores to Taobao, with nearly 80% from new users 4.
  • Retail tech vendors face infrastructure needs. Platforms need computing capacity with AI for complex supply chains 4. That opens sales for warehouse management systems, demand forecasting, and last-mile optimization in a 2 trillion yuan market by 2030 3.
