Alibaba, Temasek back Lightelligence $319m HK IPO
Lightelligence, a Shanghai-based optical computing company, is due to start trading in Hong Kong on April 28 after raising HK$2.5 billion (US$319 million) in an IPO priced at HK$183.2 (US$23.37) per share.
The listing comes as investors bet AI demand will boost optical hardware suppliers.
Alibaba Investment, GIC, and Temasek subscribed for more than 71% of the shares on offer.
The stock rose over 300% in unofficial trading before the debut.
Lightelligence posted a 1.3 billion yuan (US$190 million) loss in 2025.
The company said about 70% of net proceeds will fund research, as Chinese optical stocks, including Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink, rose 51% and 22% this month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Losses may weigh on market position and customer growth
- The company is still unprofitable, yet it ranked No. 2 in China’s scale-up optical interconnect market by 2025 revenue, according to Frost & Sullivan 1.
- By the end of 2025, it had 44 commercial customers. Its systems supported GPU clusters with several thousand cards and lifted average model floating-point operations per second (FLOPS) use by more than 50% 1.
- Its products work alongside GPUs, easing data-transfer and matrix-computation bottlenecks inside AI systems 2.
The IPO tests demand for optical interconnect infrastructure
- The listing gauges investor interest during US-China tech tensions. Lightelligence said its business was not subject to US export control restrictions 2.
- Strong demand points to growing interest in AI hardware beyond processors, as bandwidth and latency inside servers limit performance 3.
- The offering may speed wider use of optical interconnects, since better data flow and lower power use matter more as AI systems scale 1.
