Alibaba in talks to refinance $6.5b loan in 2026

Alibaba is in discussions with banks to refinance a US$6.5 billion loan due in 2026, according to sources.

The company is proposing a new five-year revolving credit facility, offering a rate of less than 80 basis points above the Secured Overnight Financing Rate to current lenders.

Negotiations are ongoing, and terms may still change.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic refinancing timing aligns with major AI infrastructure investments

Alibaba’s loan refinancing comes as the company is experiencing significant momentum in its cloud and AI businesses, which require substantial capital investment.

The company’s Cloud Intelligence Group has reported 18% revenue growth, with AI-related products achieving triple-digit growth for seven consecutive quarters 1. This strong performance in their most capital-intensive division suggests the refinancing could help fund continued expansion in AI infrastructure.

Despite having $50.2 billion in net cash 1, refinancing the $6.5 billion loan at favorable rates below 80 basis points over SOFR allows Alibaba to preserve cash while securing long-term funding for their $53 billion infrastructure plan focused on AI and cloud capabilities 1.

The timing appears strategic as cloud infrastructure investments typically require years to generate returns. The five-year term of the proposed revolving credit facility aligns well with this investment cycle.

2️⃣ Debt refinancing provides financial flexibility during business transformation

The refinancing reflects Alibaba’s broader strategy to optimize its capital structure while transitioning from primarily e-commerce to a more diversified technology company.

The company is actively returning $16.5 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends 2, suggesting they’re balancing growth investments with shareholder returns rather than simply accumulating cash.

With their traditional e-commerce business showing modest 7% growth in the March quarter, maintaining access to low-cost debt capital through the revolving credit facility provides financial flexibility as they scale higher-growth segments like cloud computing, which now generates $4.15 billion in quarterly revenue 3.

This approach allows Alibaba to maintain liquidity for strategic opportunities while their business mix shifts toward more capital-intensive but higher-margin cloud and AI services.
